The first thing I need to know is...

HOW are you putting your finished product out there? 

• • • Are you self-publishing?  

    • Are you going to be searching for a publishing house or a literary agent? 

    • Is it going to be online only, or a real, hold-in-your-hands, satisfying, tactile-gasm?  (Can you tell what medium I prefer?)

Once you have the first (or 749th...) draft of your manuscript ready, 

and you know how you want to get it into people's hands, then...

It's time to hire an EDITOR!

Choose Your HOLY GRAIL:

Developmental Editing

• This is your grail if you're new to the game and have a completed manuscript that only you and your dog have read. It's the first stop in a total editing experience.

• Developmental editing is a quick read-through, focusing on the flow of the story itself more than the fiddly grammar, typos and technical stuff.

• Also called "structural editing," "content editing," "or story editing."

• Think BIG PICTURE. This level of editing involves looking at the plot, structure, character development, character relationships, world-building (if applicable), what's at stake, who do you need to kill (it gets easier, I promise), conflict clarity, build and resolution, pace, viewpoint, tense, narrative style, theme, genre, etc.

Copy Editing

• This is your grail if you want "the works." (Think Brazilian vs Bikini)

• This is also known as "Line Editing," "Stylistic Editing," or "Sentence-level Editing."

• Line Editing includes rewriting sections to improve or fix overall story FLOW, logic, POV, chapter transitions, and the like.

• Heavy Copy Editing deals with the little technical bastards, like word choice, punctuation (You can pry the Oxford Comma from my cold, dead hands!), spelling, grammar, continuity, formatting, etc.

• I focus on the Chicago Style Guide, FYI. (Sort of. Deal.)

Proofreading

• This is your last step before publishing! 

• This is your grail if you've already been through the gamut, you've had the heavy breathing--I mean heavy EDITing done, many times, and your manuscript is ready for its audience! 

• It's a quickie read-through, but I turn my attention-to-detail on Godzilla-mode and go ham on your a--I mean I do a very thorough job.

• This is more than just checking your tie is straight before you go off to prom. It focuses on grammar, consistency, continuity errors, page numbers, chapter headings, illustrations, chapter breaks, segues and so much more. 

• This is where I take great pleasure in finding anything and everything your previous editor(s) may have missed. And when I do (and I always do), I celebrate. HARD.
